Camino Real, Las Cruces New Mexico

This project was designed by Lea Anne Lake as an acknowledgement of the importance of the Camino Real, or the Kings Road to the history of the Las Cruces area and the entire southwest. The road is very ancient and Spaniards followed the old Indian trail into the area from Mexico City. One important milestones is that livestock, sheep, cattle and horses were introduced into North America on this road.

This Sculpture is of a Spaniard fixing a wheel. The wheel is wood and the figure is cast bronze. To create this piece, Lea Anne Lake researched the appropriate clothing for a Spaniard of the time period and then found patterns and appropriate fabrics and sewed the outfit that the spaniard wears in this sculpture. He is wearing a doublet and pantaloons.

Buffalo Soldier designed by Lea Anne Lake. Buffalo Soldiers of the 125th Infantry, were first stationed at Fort Selden, just north of Las Cruces. This piece also includes a bronze campfire.

Below, is a wooden Carratta, which is the type of wagon that Spaniards would have used to haul products north from Mexico City. The bronze lamb signifies the first sheep that came into the American West, they entered on the Camino Real.

All the pieces at the foundry, before patina application.
